"Employees who work in a role that can effectively be done from home are welcome to do so until June 30, 2021", an Amazon spokeswoman said in an emailed statement on October 20, adding the guidance is applicable globally.

The Seattle-based company isn't the only tech giant that has extended the work-from-home option for employees.

The decision to allow staff to continue working from home is in line with a range of similar decisions made by tech firms. Uncertainty around school re-openings - and abrupt closures tied to coronavirus outbreaks - has complicated the return to work for parents of school-aged children.

While responding to the concerns, the Amazon spokeswoman said on Tuesday, "We have invested significant funds and resources to keep those who choose to come to the office safe through physical distancing, deep cleaning, temperature checks, and by providing face coverings and hand sanitizer,".

Frontline employees working for both Amazon and Whole Foods have repeatedly gone on strike, filed whistleblower complaints with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and individual states' workplace safety agencies, sued the company, and reached out to media organizations to draw attention to what they say are unsafe working conditions during the pandemic.

This decision seems to be following the development where in less than three weeks, more than 19,000 of its US frontline workers contracted the coronavirus this year.
