Ancelotti has since spoken publicly on the incident, claiming that suggestions that Pickford's challenge was intentionally malicious and premeditated are "too much".

The Italian coach also namechecked the stricken Liverpool centre-back for causing an injury to James Rodriguez which is set to rule the Colombian out of this weekend's trip to Southampton.

"To be clear, we are really sorry for the injury of Virgil van Dijk". Every one of us hopes he can recover soon and well.

'There was this contact with Pickford: it was mistimed but the Premier League is so fast, it is not so hard to arrive a little bit later.

"Jordan arrived a little bit later but his intention was to try to reach the ball".

"I can understand people are interested in that", said the boss at Friday's pre-match press conference, when asked if Van Dijk had undergone surgery yet.

"To say it was premeditated, and this and that, in my opinion, is too much".

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool recently suffered a major blow when van Dijk - who had been a vital cog of the side since his arrival at Anfield in 2018 - sustained an ACL injury during the Merseyside Derby last week.

'Jordan is really sad, really disappointed (Van Dijk is injured) but to say it was premeditated, it was stupid, is not fair.

"But it will be fine and will happen in an appropriate time".

"Unfortunately, James had a problem during the game (against Liverpool)", Ancelotti told evertontv.

Van Dijk was a notable omission from Liverpool's submitted 25-man squad list, indicating the defender is highly unlikely to be fit and available until at least the closing of the January transfer window when the registration period re-opens.
