Max Verstappen said his collision with Lance Stroll in the second practice session for the Portuguese Grand Prix was completely avoidable, although both drivers avoided punishment for the incident.

Verstappen pulled alongside the rear-wheel of the Candian's auto before the Racing Point swept across the apex, caused by what seemed to be a misunderstanding from both drivers as to the other's run-plan.

Stewards had to take some time to remove the vehicle and all the debris from the fire but once the session was restarted, the red flag was soon out again.

Verstappen had been forced to abandon a previous timed-lap and had let Stroll overtake him at the final corner as both drivers crossed the line to start a new flying effort in the closing stages of FP2.

"Man, is this guy blind?" What the f**k is wrong with him.

"To be honest, I don't want to talk about it too much because I was so surprised", Verstappen said. I don't know where I had to go. I was starting my lap and he just finished his lap, we'll see what happens. It's FP2 and it's just a shame that we touch. While Verstappen was able to continue and get back to the pits, the incident left Stroll's auto beached in the gravel at Turn 1, causing a red flag. "It's always a discussion and we can go on forever but it's just silly".

Verstappen was able to return to the pits as the red flag came out, whereas Stroll was left stranded in the gravel, leaving Szafnauer damning in his verdict of the Dutchman's driving.

Also speaking to Sky Sports F1, Horner confirmed Szafnauer's belief that Verstappen had expected Stroll to back off following the completion of his lap. He doesn't know Lance is going for a second lap. "Lance has gone into the last corner and Max has let him go because he wants to get the tow".

"He's taken the advantage of the tow, pulled up alongside him, and assumed he's going to back out of it because he knows he's up the inside".

"He felt Lance was later on the DRS and then obviously Lance, for whatever reason, hasn't seen him and he has committed to the corner and turned in. It's not like they don't have any other good options".
