The stage at Belmont University's Curb Event Center hall in Nashville, Tenn., Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, where a presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

Trump and Biden will now have two minutes each of uninterrupted time to speak at the beginning of every 15-minute segment of the 90-minute debate. "But when you think of it, nobody could benefit more from being muted than Donald Trump", writes New York Times columnist Gail Collins.

In that way, this is Trump's last chance to show voters he's the better candidate for the job he holds. Trump needs to score some hits in the televised encounter to steady a campaign that is struggling, in part due to his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 222,000 people in the United States and is surging again worldwide. Trump, 74, passed up another planned debate last week after it was switched to a virtual format in the wake of his COVID-19 diagnosis.

Trump holds a lead over Biden as more trusted on the economy in Florida, 51% say they prefer Trump vs. 46% Biden.

A Joe Biden Spokesman, TJ Ducklo said in response to the Stepien letter that both campaigns and the CPD agreed months ago the debate moderator would choose topics. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Biden ahead by nine points nationally, down from 12 points during the first week of October.

"President Trump will continue to draw the clear contrast between his strong, determined, successful leadership and Joe Biden's nearly half a century of failure, globalism and grift", said Boris Epshteyn, a strategic adviser to Trump's campaign.

"We realize, after discussions with both campaigns, that neither campaign may be totally satisfied with the measures announced today", the CPD said.

Republicans say Trump is surging at exactly the right moment - some swing state polls show him making up ground, while others don't - and that he will use the debate to try to demonstrate to voters both that he has been a capable president and that Biden would not be.

Trump is expected to return to a line of attack that surfaced in the first debate, accusing Biden and his son Hunter Biden of unethical practices in China and Ukraine.

The Commission on Presidential Debate (CPD), which is in charge of organizing these events in the country, announced past Friday the meeting will have six issues to debate: the fight against Covid-19, USA families, race, climate change, homeland security and leadership. No evidence has been verified that support the corruption allegations by Trump and his aides, and Biden in the first debate called them false and discredited.
