This, along with the smaller size of the batteries as compared to the iPhone 11 series, could together be the reason for the 20% impact in battery life that has been seen in real-life testing.

As far as how 5G actually performed on the iPhone 12, the review notes that "it performs as well or better than 5G Android phones". And we know that no one is going to surf the web for 10 or 11 hours straight.

Apple has revealed that the iPhone 12 series will allow users to download iOS updates with 5G connectivity. "If you still don't have 5G service, contact your carrier", the company added.

The support document from Apple also made mention of the iPhone 12's Dual SIM mode in that 5G can not be had on both cards except in China.

More specifically, Apple stated its intentions to use the X55 modem for devices launched between June 2020 and May 2021, the X60 modem between June 2021 and May 2022, and the X65 and X70 modems between June 2022 and May 2024.

According to an internal Verizon document obtained by MacRumors, the downloading of iOS updates over cellular is limited to 5G iPhones with the "Allow More Data on 5G" mode enabled.

What's weird is that when the iPhone is limiting you to LTE speeds, it will still display the 5G icon in the status bar. It also supports dual-mode 5G (SA/ NSA), TDD and FDD, spectrum sharing, and more features. An iPhone 12 teardown video has, however, now shed light on this piece of information. In the meantime, however, it's definitely something to keep an eye on, and we'd definitely recommend leaving your 5G setting to "Auto" and taking as much advantage of Apple's Smart Data Mode as possible.
