Before 2020, the 2002 Hayman Fire held the record for Colorado's largest at 137,760 acres. The fire spans more than 14,600 acres and is about 30% contained.

Driven by strong winds and racing through dry fuels and timber, the East Troublesome Fire in Grand County continued to rage Thursday, growing to 170,000 acres as it crossed the Continental Divide and forced new evacuations around Estes Park.

Jason Randolph captured this timelapse footage of the East Troublesome Fire on Wednesday, October 21, from Woodland Park, northwest of Colorado Springs.

Both the Grand County and Jackson County sheriffs have ordered evacuations due to the fires. "If I put cops in some of these risky spots, basically I'm just creating extra work for the fire department while they could be working on protecting other lives and other structures".

"Red flag warning will be in place for Friday", fire officials said in a Facebook post. Rocky Mountain National Park is also closed. In Colorado, fires across the state have been an exclamation point on a challenging year.

Peter Comer who was working a seasonal job at the YMCA in Estes Park said he and some friends weren't expecting to evacuate until the alert was issued.

Although the plan is to return to Estes Park, for now Comer is staying at a YMCA camp in Grant until they get permission to return. The Cameron Peak Fire, in the mountains west of Fort Collins, spans more than 206,900 acres and was 57% contained Friday.

The Mullen Fire, which started in Wyoming's Medicine Bow National Forest and crept into northern Colorado, showed little activity with crews tamping hot spots. It had charred almost 280 square miles (450 square kilometers) as of Friday.
