At the time, The Times reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were upset about the photo, and saw it as a "signal that they were being excluded from royal life".

She said the Duke "could neither understand nor relate" to Harry's decision to quit the Royal Family, he was also "deeply upset" by the couple's choice.

The Duke had apparently "harboured doubts" about the American-born Meghan, with the book "Prince Philip Revealed" claiming: "His grandson's behaviour is completely alien to him so not unnaturally the relationship has suffered".

He has kept busy during the months of lockdown by fishing, writing letters and reading, the book reveals.

Ingrid revealed the Prince will often get up "as early as necessary" to arrive on time, adding: 'He's a proud man, he doesn't want to be seen with a stick and would never consider a Zimmer frame'.

Prince Philip famously gave up his naval career to support the Queen, who was crowned in 1953 at 25 years old.

Speaking to Sky News, the royal biographer said the elderly prince couldn't understand why the former actress didn't follow his example when she married Prince Harry in May 2018.

'And why can't Meghan just give up her acting career, support her husband and support the monarchy?

"As he used to say to Diana, this is not a popularity contest, this is all of us working together".

"According to insiders, this formal photograph, taken in the Buckingham Palace Throne Room a week before Christmas 2019, was the idea of Prince Charles, anxious to promote his cause of the 'slimmed-down monarchy.' Palace sources have also let it be known that the plan of depicting the direct line of royal succession was enthusiastically supported by Prince William, who was not saying anything for the record-but who wanted to send his younger brother a message".

Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are now living in the US.
