Moderna, among the furthest along in developing a vaccine for Covid-19, has signed supply contracts with the US, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Israel and Qatar and is in talks with other parties, including the European Union.

Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine contains genetic material called messenger RNA, or mRNA which provokes the immune system to fight the virus, scientists believe.

This decision covering the cost of a vaccine for Medicare and Medicaid is a change from the current policy.

According to a press release from Sisolak's office, the group's goal is that the additional review would not cause a delay in the distribution of vaccines.

In March, the CARES Act was passed by Congress in an effort to make vaccines free of charge.

Moderna said there would be two interim analyses of the Covid-19 vaccine candidate and that the company is committed to "full transparency" in the development of the vaccine. The provision on private insurers will last throughout the course of the public health emergency.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says it wants to ensure 'broad vaccine access and coverage'.

Senior British government sources reportedly expect a verdict on whether a Pfizer Inc-backed COVID-19 vaccine works will be available before the results are in on AstraZeneca Plc's competing vaccine.

She said that the global manufacturing capacity for vaccines is vastly inadequate for the billions of doses that are needed and that the United Kingdom's manufacturing capability to date has been "equally scarce". Moderna recently finished enrolling participants for a 30,000-volunteer study that is testing whether the vaccine can help prevent COVID-19. But even if the company files for emergency authorization by next month, it's unlikely the approval can be granted this year.

In addition to covering the cost of a vaccine, the new CMS rule also outlines how Medicare plans to cover the "new generation of Covid-19 treatments" for its recipients.

"Our job at Medicare is to make sure that these drugs, once they enter the market, they are immediately accessible by the elderly who need them".

Nevada, Oregon and Washington have all agreed to join California in its plan to allow an independent group of health experts to review the safety and efficacy of any COVID-19 vaccines before they're approved for use in their states.
