'Treasure-trove' of unseen Tolkien essays on Middle-earth set for 2021 release

Chris Smith, HarperCollins deputy publishing director, said: "It is well known that JRR Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord Of The Rings in 1954-5".

"The Nature of Middle-earth" will be published in June 2021. After those monumental stories, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and a few other novels and collections surrounding all of Middle-earth throughout thousands of years that he wrote up until his death in 1973 rounded out the prestigious and treasured series.

A "treasure-trove" of previously unreleased essays from Lord Of The Rings author JRR Tolkien exploring the vast and intricate fantasy world he created will be published next year, HarperCollins said.

Approved for publication by the Tolkien estate, the new book of essays will be called The Nature of Middle-earth. Hostetter has worked as a computer engineer for NASA since 1985.

The new volume explores Elvish immortality and reincarnation, and the Powers of the Valar along with the lands and beasts of Númenor, the geography of the rivers and beacon-hills of Gondor, and even who had beards, said Deb Brody, vice president and publisher of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books & Media. Its distinguished author list includes eleven Nobel Prize winners, forty-eight Pulitzer Prize winners, fifteen National Book Award winners, and more than one hundred Caldecott, Newbery, Printz, and Sibert Medal and Honor recipients. HMH Productions develops and produces media and licensed products related to brands such as Carmen Sandiego and Oregon Trail.
