Trump options narrow as MI backs Biden win

Official certifications of election results in the 50 states have started rolling in, and are expected to show that Biden won some 6 million votes more than Trump, and 306 votes in the Electoral College that determines the victor, compared to Trump's 232.

With the door slammed shut in Georgia and having been stung by a series of court defeats, the Trump team is resting its hopes on getting Republican-controlled legislatures in other battleground states won by Biden to set aside the results and declare Trump the victor, according to three people familiar with the plan.

The new batch of ballots slashed Biden's lead over Trump by some 800 votes - still not enough to overcome the Democrat's advantage.

The state is set to certify the results Monday.

Michigan GOP lawmakers Mike Shirkey and Lee Chatfield were summoned to the White House on Friday in a presumed bid to overturn the election in the president's favor even though the vote clearly went to Joe Biden, released statements saying they'll follow the law. Both Shirkey and Chatfield have said that they will honor their state's popular vote and not stray from the process of how electors in MI are selected.

Meanwhile, two GOP state lawmakers from MI met with the president at the White House on Friday over its election process, amid the president's ongoing legal challenges in several battleground states.

Democrats warned that Mr Trump was trying to pressure the legislators to subvert the will of voters and seat their own electors to the Electoral College, which gathers next month.

How has the White House responded?

The two Congressmen admit they "have not yet been made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in MI and as legislative leaders, we will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan's electors, just as we have said throughout this election".

"While in 2016 President Trump became the duly elected president, many sought to undermine him, discredit him, delegitimise him and deny his victory". Ms McEnany also said that media outlets had accused Mr Trump of having colluded with Russian Federation, an allegation that a major justice department inquiry found no evidence to support.

On September 24, Shirkey led the Senate to pass a resolution assuring that electors will vote for the candidate with the most votes as certified by election officials.

During a statewide audit earlier this week, election officials found the 600 ballots that were not counted in the earlier totals.

"The numbers reflect the verdict of the people, not a decision by the secretary of state's office or courts, or of either campaigns", Raffensperger, a Republican and Trump supporter, told reporters, just hours before his office certified the results. I'm disappointed, our candidate didn't win Georgia's electoral votes. "Working as an engineer throughout my life, I live by the motto that numbers don't lie", he said, adding that the numbers presented today were correct.
