Roman Abramovich dusted off the chequebook in west London and bankrolled another elaborate spending spree.

"He came into the season with an injury and it was a domino effect through the year".

Frank Lampard's side were in fine form heading into the current worldwide break, leaving them just three points off Leicester City at the summit of the Premier League.

"A lot of people are talking about Kalidou Koulibaly, but he is 29 years old and would be very expensive".

"I actually quite like the Leicester defender, Caglar Soyuncu". So I don't think it's a problem to show weakness.

"Also the defender at Inter, Milan Skriniar - everybody is talking about him, another very good player".

"So there are players out there, but it is such a hard position to fill at the moment".

The Blues' attackers have plenty of support acts providing them with ammunition, but Hasselbaink believes greater depth could also be added in that department.

The report now believes Conte is desperate to sign the tireless midfielder once again and his current employers are in "deep talks" with the player's representatives in order to see whether a deal can be done. He is an incredible player and person and I certainly don't want to lose him.

"At moments you'll sit down with reflection, and of course you look at how the squad looks, but I must make myself 100 per cent culpable as well".

Given the unpredictable nature of the Premier League so far this season, it's well within the realms of possibility that Chelsea could mount a serious title challenge in 2020/21.
