A man died Sunday after being attacked by a shark in Western Australia, the eighth fatality in the country this year.

A police spokesman said the man was recovered from the water and was treated by local officers before St John Ambulance paramedics arrived.

The swimmer was attacked on Cable Beach in Broome, on the northwest coast of Western Australia, at about 8.45am on Sunday morning.

The man was in the water when the shark mauled his leg and bit off his hand just before 9am local time. He died at the scene, police said.

The state's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said on its website that it was "involved in assisting WA (Western Australia) Police after a serious shark bite incident", involving an adult man.

Authorities have asked people to take additional care near Cable Beach.

Shark attacks are rare on Cable Beach, a 22-kilometre (13-mile) stretch of pristine white sand next to the town of Broome.
