In December, WestJet flights to Hawaii are taking off and Air Canada is doing the same.

Dreaming of surf, sand, and fun in the sun?

Air Canada and WestJet will be identifying testing entities in Canada, with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health's approval, for purposes of the pre-testing program.

Canadians who wish to travel to Hawaii will be allowed to bypass the self-quarantine period with the proviso that they show prof of a negative coronavirus test, under new rules announced Thursday. Air travelers have a 72-hour window before their flight in which to get a test. Getting results can take 48 hours or longer.

Additional details about Hawaii's pre-travel testing requirements for customers will be available shortly on aircanada.com. Ige also said passengers from Canada will soon have the option to get pre-tested and come to Hawaii. The program provides a pre-travel testing option to give travellers an alternative option to Hawaii's mandatory 14-day quarantine.

The testing, which costs $150 CAD per person and is payable by the guest, is now only available in Alberta, the testing is open to all Canadian residents. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments that have opened their borders to tourists could impose strict travel restrictions suddenly, which could make it hard for you to return home. Those who failed to do so were required to quarantine for 14 days after their arrival. Travelers without proof of a negative test result prior to boarding their flight to Hawai'i will be required to self-quarantine for 14-days or the length of stay, whichever is shorter.

"Many Canadians love to visit Hawaiʻi during the winter months to escape the cold weather, so the timing for this works well".

Canada has officially joined the USA mainland and Japan in the state of Hawaii's Safe Travel program, which waives the mandatory quarantine for passengers who test negative for the coronavirus prior to their flight. "We look forward to our Honolulu and Maui flights from Vancouver and Calgary starting mid-December onboard our state-of-the-art Dreamliner aircraft, featuring our industry-leading Air Canada ClearCare+ biosafety measures", said Timothy Liu, Managing Director, Sales Planning at Air Canada.

The airline will begin the testing program in partnership with DynaLIFE in Alberta for guests holding a WestJet-ticketed itinerary to Hawaii within 72-hours.

All visitors intending to visit Hawaii must register prior to travel: Hawaii entrance requirements are found here.

The updated policy, added Governor Ige, applies to domestic transpacific flights and global flights departing from locations in which pre-testing programs are in place.
