The NFL world was shattered once more on Sunday after Cincinnati Bengals star QB Joe Burrow took a devastating hit to his lower leg against the Washington Football Team.

Washington defenders Jonathan Allen and Montez Sweat sandwiched Burrow after he threw a pass intended for Tyler Boyd.

Players from both teams were seen comforting the rookie as he left the field and he was quickly sent well wishes on social media.

Young, who was taken second behind Burrow in this year's draft, played alongside the quarterback at Ohio State University before Burrow transferred to Louisiana State.

After the Bengals confirmed via Twitter that Burrow wouldn't return to the game Burrow himself tweeted a message to fans. The 23-year-old entered the game with 2,485 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions in nine starts. Going into Sunday's game, Burrow had been hit a league-high 72 times.

"Thanks for all the love".
