The oxygen generation system (OGS) has failed in the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS), according to the crew's talks with the Earth, broadcast by NASA. The trip was an ultrafast, two-orbit one, thus the trip to the ISS took only three hours.

"Three hours and three minutes", tweeted Roscosmos chief Dmitriy Rogozin in celebration of the journey that concluded with docking four minutes ahead of schedule. It launched from Baikonur cosmodrome and had Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov, Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and NASA astronaut Kathleen Rubins on board.

Journeys to the ISS usually take around six hours - a time that was a vast improvement on the two-day flights that prevailed prior to 2013.

This launch marked a milestone in terms of a crewed Soyuz mission, as it became the first to carry out an ultrafast, three-hour journey to the ISS.

The launch is sandwiched between two SpaceX missions - the first manned spaceflights to the ISS under NASA's aegis since 2011.

The new astronauts came aboard from the Soyuz spacecraft and the known orbiting laboratory at officially 7:07AM EDT.

The NASA duo returned safely on August 2 and a fresh SpaceX launch, this time anticipating a full-length half-year mission to the space station, is expected next month. This is Rubins' second voyage into space after she was aboard the Soyuz MS spacecraft on its first test flight to the ISS in July 2016. "It has been tested with Progress [cargo] vehicles", Ryzhikov said in a pre-launch press conference on Tuesday.

"We don't get the chance to pick our launch date or what happens on station however absolutely I feel unimaginably fortunate to be on station when... these occasions are going on", said the American space traveler.

The ISS, which has been for all time involved since 2000, has been an uncommon case of collaboration among Moscow and Washington. The two astronauts on board were not hurt.
