Rampaging Vakatawa powers France past Scotland

Their scheduled matches against France last weekend and Italy this weekend were also cancelled, and it was no surprise the Scotland game suffered the same fate.

It took France just two minutes after the restart to produce the game's first moment of real quality as Fickou's off-load released Rattez surging through a huge gap before he handed over to Vakatawa to score the opening try.

Duncan Weir led the response from Scotland as he kicked back to back three-pointers at the end of the first quarter to level the scores for the hosts. "I'm old enough and ugly enough to realise that, I don't need other people to tell me".

France went ahead through Ramos' third-minute penalty.

It wasn't until the second half, when the French finally broke the Scottish defence, that the game's only try was scored.

But Jalibert, only playing in place of injured first-choice France fly-half Romain Ntamack, landed a well-taken drop-goal.

As the half time was approaching, Weir slotted another penalty kick as the opening half ended level with 12-12 scoreline for both the teams.

It was another encouraging result for France, which has lost just once in the pandemic-affected 2020 and narrowly missed out on the Six Nations title.

Matt Fagerson is next to be given the chance to stake a claim for Scotland's problematic number eight jersey after Blade Thomson did little to show he is the long-term pick at the back of the scrum, while the only change in the backs see wing Blair Kinghorn replace Edinburgh club-mate Darcy Graham.

Rattez then found powerhouse centre Vakatawa, who held off a despairing effort from Hogg for a try converted by Ramos.

Scotland responded with Weir's fifth penalty but holding off the rampant French pack was becoming an ever harder task as Les Bleus grasped the set-piece upper hand.

But France's powerful rolling maul was proving increasingly hard for Scotland to combat and it produced a penalty.

France were awarded a 28-0 win after their Group B opener was cancelled last Saturday and Gregor Townsend's Scotland side will expect to be given the same.
