Friday is likely to be sunny and chilly highs only reaching about 40.

A special weather statement was in effect on Sunday morning, forecasting possible "heavy wet snow" over higher elevations of Southern Vancouver Island and parts of the Lower Mainland beginning Monday.

The other main story this week will be the potential for strong winds Tuesday and Wednesday, NWS added.

The rain is expected to move out during the day on Thursday and well ahead of the colder air behind the front, which means no chances for frozen precipitation for south Alabama, according to the weather service.

"Environment Agency teams are out on the ground clearing grills and screens and operating flood defences as required". The showers will fall as a mixture of rain, hail, sleet and snow across the whole of Northern Ireland. It will turn mostly sunny in the afternoon.

An area of high pressure is expected to the west of the United Kingdom on Christmas Day bringing cold and generally dry conditions for most. There's a chance it could shift to all snow and if that's the case we'll be looking at a coating but not much more. Coastal showers in the east should soon fade. By mid to late day rain showers move in, which may change over to snow or a rain-snow mix overnight. Highs will be near 60 on Wednesday, but will only be in the 30s and 40s on Thursday.

It is expected to stay unsettled for the rest of the weekend and in the run up to New Year.
