New UK mutation of coronavirus detected in returned travellers in NSW

This is to be expected - SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus and these viruses mutate and change.

A number of nations around the world have closed their borders to travellers from the United Kingdom after the detection of a new strain of Covid-19.

It has been named VUI-202012/01, the first variant under investigation in December.

What did England's Chief Medical Officer, Prof Chris Whitty, say about it?

Is this something to be anxious about?

If the virus spreads faster it will be harder to control.

Studies are ongoing to assess the impact of this new variant on the risk of reinfections or the efficacy of the vaccines being now rolled out.

The possibility that new strains will be resistant to existing vaccines are low, but not "inexistent", Dr Moncef Slaoui, the chief science adviser for the USA government's vaccine distribution effort, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union".

The ECDC said a few cases with the new variant have been detected in Iceland, Denmark and the Netherlands.

There are now about 4,000 mutations in the spike protein gene.

"The evidence that has been collated, therefore, strongly suggests that the current second wave we are experiencing is being driven by this new variant", Mkhize said.

Erica Pan, California's acting health director, said the state is seeking more information about the new strain, including why British scientists believe it is more transmissible, but called that finding a concern. "It is beating all the others in terms of transmission".

His government has since made a U-turn, with the health minister Matt Hancock blaming a new strain that was "out of control".

But because the new strain does have some changes on the spike protein that could affect its function, "we have more concern that something real is going on", said Dr. Bedford, who is co-developer of Nextstrain, an open-source project that analyzes and tracks the genomes of pathogens including the new coronavirus.

A number of variants have been detected using sequencing studies in the UK.

In April, researchers in Sweden found a virus with two genetic changes that seemed to make it roughly two times more infectious, Gupta said. A slightly modified strain can become the most common one in a country or region just because that's the strain that first took hold there or because "super spreader" events helped it become entrenched.

Ronald Klain, Biden's incoming chief of staff, told CBS's Face the Nation that the president-elect would be briefed on the new variant "early next week".

Transit officials have announced they will put more officers at train stations to stop unnecessary trips, and put more police on the roads to stop people from leaving locked down areas, Langfitt said.

However, if they spread more easily but cause the same disease severity, more people will end up becoming ill in a shorter period of time.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said Sunday that the mutation doesn't mean the virus is more unsafe.
