Tierney has suffered injury problems since a £25million move from Celtic in 2019, including a serious shoulder issue, but Arteta believes he is a future Arsenal captain.

It seems to have set Arsenal on their way who have now opened a two goal lead against The baggies.

Since the start of December, no defender in the league has created more chances than Tierney (15), while Andy Robertson (29), Aaron Cresswell (25), Trent Alexander-Arnold (23) and Joao Cancelo (22) are the only defenders to have crafted more opportunities than the Scotland international's tally of 21 this term.

Arteta has been delighted by what he has seen from Tierney in recent months and has revealed that the full-back has been a "joy" to work with at The Emirates. It's just the way he is, he does it in a natural way.

"In both [attack and defence] he can do really well". He's feeling good and we will assess him.

"He's shy, so humble as well".

"He came here and it took him a while, he had a really bad injury. but he's a natural leader".

In November, Arteta said of Saliba: "I'm fed up with the situation because, as you could see, we tried to find a way in the last few days to give him some football".

"We had moments when it's exactly what I want, exactly what we're trying to do".

Arsenal is now at the 11th spot in Premier League standings with 23 points from 17 matches.

The 29-year-old scored twice as Arsenal secured a third consecutive Premier League victory with a 4-0 win at West Brom on Saturday, though Arteta insists there is no urgency over a new deal and says the forward's future will be discussed at the end of the current campaign.

"We will talk in the summer and make a decision then".

'We haven't talked about anything relating to his contract.
