"We were really close to being in the playoffs", Cousins said after throwing three touchdowns in the first half and finishing with a season-high 405 yards passing. They won five of six midway through the season to be in the postseason race, but dashed those hopes by losing three straight before closing with a win at Detroit.

Without running back Dalvin Cook, who left the team last week after the unexpected death of his father, the Vikings didn't lean on his replacements as much. The Vikings were 6-9 coming into the matchup.

Alexander Mattison ran for 16 yards to convert a fourth-and-1 from the Lions 25 with 2:28 left, allowing the Vikings to run out the clock to seal the win.

Cousins was 28 of 40 and didn't throw an interception, finishing with his highest total of yards passing since September 27, 2018.

Entering the final week of the 2020-21 regular season with 1,267 receiving yards, Jefferson needed 111 yards to establish a new Super Bowl-era (since 1966) rookie record.

With Matthew Stafford dropping back in the pocket with seven minutes remaining in regulation, the Detroit play-caller would deliver a strike to a streaking Marvin Jones the end zone. Jefferson caught nine of 12 targets for 133 yards on Sunday.

It was a roughing-the-passer call on Detroit defensive back Tracy Walker, who blitzed when Minnesota faced a fourth-and-goal situation. But he was flagged for roughing the passer. The official ruled that he landed on Cousins with his body weight.
