A source familiar with the relationship between the two men told CNN that McConnell is furious with Trump.

And if you're wondering why McConnell might be more in favor of turning on the president now, the report adds, "He has made clear in private discussions that he believes now is the moment to move on the weakened lame duck, whom he blames for Republicans losing the Senate".

If Democrats proceed with impeachment and trigger an impeachment trial, all other Senate business would be tabled until the trial (which, again, is extremely unlikely to end in conviction) is completed, meaning that Biden's legislative agenda would be put on hold for a futile effort that is likely only to enrage Trump supporters. This would make Trump the first president in American history to be impeached twice. Democrats say that Trump's comments last Wednesday incited a riot at the US Capitol.

"This failed attempt to obstruct the Congress, this failed insurrection, only underscores how crucial the task before us is for our Republic", Mr. McConnell said as the Senate reconvened on Wednesday to finish the electoral count disrupted by the siege.

McConnell wants to fully review the article of impeachment the House plans to vote on before taking a public position on impeachment or censure, but he wants to do some damage to Trump's career prospects on his way out the door, according to The Times. "For [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi and [Democratic leader Sen.] Chuck Schumer to continue on this path, I think it's causing tremendous danger to our country, and it's causing tremendous anger". I don't see that, and I think the House should know that also. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) encouraged House Republicans on a Monday call to "vote your conscience".

Also on Tuesday afternoon, GOP Rep. John Katko of NY became the first House Republican to publicly come out in favor of impeaching Trump. The entire House Republican caucus, including Katko, voted against impeachment last time. Katko is one of just a few Republicans representing a congressional district won by both President-elect Joe Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Democrats are set to pass a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke constitutional authority under the 25th Amendment to oust Trump.
