McTominay's header in the fifth minute against the Hornets was the game's only goal at Old Trafford, sending United through to the FA Cup fourth round with a 1-0 win.

"He should have scored a few more on set-plays before now because he is a monster of a human being. As long as I've got the manager's trust, I'm happy doing my job".

"I think we played some very good stuff, created chances and then we let them back into the game but we are through".

That follows on from Solskjaer also bemoaning a lack of quality after another cup game, the Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City, though he has still said that one of the more high-profile members of the sidelined squad at present, in Donny van de Beek, can expect to get more chances in future.

"I'm delighted we are through".

"We started really well", McTominay told BT Sport. The opposite happened more or less.

"I've been here since I had just turned five, so that's 18 or 19 years associated with the club and it is a huge honour". I absolutely love the club, it's been my whole life.

Manchester United turn their on-pitch attentions back to the Premier League this week, while off-pitch it's still a case of trying to find the right candidates to strengthen the team during the January transfer window.

"We started really well and then for the first half an hour we were really good, moved the ball really well and there was some good combination play", McTominay added. "Exhausted legs, tired mind".
