Azar said the changes were being made to encourage states to speed up their vaccination programs.

In a move created to speed the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, California officials announced today that counties are now authorized to begin administering the vaccine to all residents aged 65 or older. President-elect Joe Biden said that when he took office all available doses would be released to ensure the maximum number of Americans had some form of protection from COVID.

In better news, almost a month after OH received its first shipment of vaccines, 85 percent of Ohio's more than 900 nursing homes have been visited for distribution of the first dose of the vaccine, Gov. Mike DeWine said during a briefing Tuesday.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar on Tuesday said the administration was releasing its full stockpile of two vaccines approved for emergency use, including some that had been held in reserve to make sure that second doses could be given on schedule.

"We wanted [vaccination sites] to be in communities", said DeWine. We are only scheduled to receive 100 more doses next week. However it notes there can be exceptions, particularly when vaccine supplies are so hard to come by and the spread of the virus in a given jurisdiction is rapid. But, 60 percent of employees at the Sandusky location have received the vaccine, and at the Georgetown home, that number is only 42 percent. The continued vaccination of health care workers and those in nursing homes and other congregate living facilities will continue, according to state health officials. Making people 65 and older eligible for the vaccine adds another 500,000 people to the mix. A bipartisan group of state lawmakers sent Newsom a letter asking for more details about when vaccines will be available.

Newsom said the state's priority is to deliver vaccines "as quickly as possible to those who face the gravest consequences".

"To those not yet eligible for vaccines, your turn is coming", he said.

California, the nation's most populous state, has seen new hospitalizations drop this week, according to health officials. He tried to do the same for Dohman's 79-year-old wife but the system was so overloaded with requests she couldn't get one until Thursday.
