Issa Rae, the creator of the popular show, made the announcement on Wednesday on Twitter, ahead of filming for the fifth season.

HBO announced that the upcoming fifth season of Insecure will be its last season.

"Very excited to film our fifth and final season!"

"Issa has turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy", Amy Gravitt, HBO's executive vice president of programming, said in a statement seen by Deadline.

"This talented team has conceived a brilliant final season for "Insecure" and we look forward to having many more stories to tell with this singular group of collaborators", she added. Its fourth season dropped on HBO in April 2020. Season 4 received nine Emmy nominations including for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Issa Rae), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Yvonne Orji).

Season 5 of "Insecure" is expected to start production later this month and will premiere later this year, HBO said.

Created by Rae and Larry Wilmore and partially based on Rae's acclaimed web series Awkward Black Girl, Insecure follows best friends Issa (Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) as they navigate their late 20s in Los Angeles.

Gravitt was referring to Prentice Penny and Melina Matsoukas, who are both executive producers on the show and directed episodes as well.
