Gov. Janet Mills authorized the deployment of National Guard troops to help support security measures that are being put in place to protect Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the days leading up to the January 20 inauguration, according to a news release issued Wednesday by the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management.

ABC reports there are now 6,600 members of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., with thousands more coming.

"Ongoing security concerns in Washington, D.C., and state capitals around the nation following last week's attack on the US Capitol must be taken seriously, and I will deploy necessary resources to keep North Carolinians safe", Cooper said. Most of the National Guard will be armed with standard-issue M4 rifles. As many as 20,000 guard members from across the country will be on hand when Joe Biden is sworn in as president Wednesday. Five people, including a U.S. Capitol Police officer, died in the unprecedented attack on January 6.

Wednesday's security briefing prep is the same one that troops receive before being deployed for Baghdad or Kabul, a senior defense official who is part of planning the security measures for the event told Fox News. That's insurrection. That's sedition.

State officials said Wednesday they were also monitoring possible armed protests but didn't yet have any threats of violence at IN locations.

Federal Aviation Administration chief Steve Dickson on Wednesday signed an order vowing a "zero tolerance approach" to any disruptive air passengers after some Trump supporters disrupted flights after the Capitol violence last week.

Officials increased the number of National Guard members who will be deployed in Washington during the presidential inauguration from 15,000 to 20,000 on Wednesday, more than three times the number of USA troops now deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan combined. It also led Democratic lawmakers to bring forth an article of impeachment against President Trump for inciting the riot.

"Impeaching the president in such a short time frame would be a mistake", said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the chamber's top Republican.
