Racing Louisville selected University of North Carolina defender Emily Fox at No. 1 in Wednesday's NWSL draft, while the Washington Spirit selected Trinity Rodman with the second pick.

Expansion Racing Louisville FC took Fox, a defender-midfielder from the University of North Carolina, to open the virtual draft. Fox is now training with the world champion United States women's national team. She was applauded by her teammates at dinner after the selection was announced. "I think right now, with COVID and everything, honestly a lot of people can say its not the right time [to turn pro], but right now I think it's a flawless time to get in there and learn and become a better player".

A longtime club player for the SoCal Blues, Rodman signed with Washington State, but never played with the Cougars last fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"[Being a professional] has been my dream forever so this is unreal to me", Rodman said after she was selected. "But I am excited to be known as Trinity Rodman and not just Dennis Rodmans daughter".

Rather than wait for the spring, the US youth global attacker chose to get a head start on her pro career and declare for the draft before playing a single minute in college. Pinto announced on Twitter on Tuesday that she was going to pursue a pro career, but said she would play this spring with the Tar Heels.

Also drafted in the opening round was TCU midfielder Yazmeen Ryan, the No. 6 pick by Portland Thorns; Stanford forward Madison Haley, the No. 7 pick by the Chicago Red Stars; USC forward Tara McKeown, the No. 8 pick by the Spirit; UCLA midfielder Viviana Villacorta, the No. 9 pick by the Orlando Pride; and Florida forward and Canadian national Deanne Rose, the 10th pick by the North Carolina Courage.

Her ability to play up top or in the midfield should give coach Mark Parsons more personnel options when his team is shorthanded during the Olympics. Ekic, a senior at Louisville, was the ACC Offensive Player of the Year.

Thanks to a waiver obtained by the NWSL from the NCAA, players drafted have until January 22, 2021 to decide whether to report immediately to their NWSL club or at the conclusion of the spring NCAA season.

A new draft rule made all college players who had used three years of eligibility available in the draft, whether or not they had formally declared. The players have until January 22 to decide.
