China Fires Back at US Allegations of Lack of Transparency

So far there has only been one report of the variant first found in Brazil.

But officials said Friday a new requirement that those arriving at the land border must have a negative COVID-19 test taken in the US within 72 hours of their arrival is created to blunt that option.

22, all land-based travelers will also be required to take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival, and an additional test toward the end of their 14-day quarantine.

The agency noted "the number of Canadian residents returning from overseas via these same airports appeared to increase steadily toward the end of the month".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday that nonessential air travelers to Canada will have to quarantine in a hotel for at least three nights at their own expense.

Ontario's mandatory airport testing began on February 1 with the province and Ford government pressing for a quicker response in an attempt to further control the spread of variants, such as the one first discovered in the UK.

Health Minister Patty Hajdu said vaccinated Canadians will not be exempt because research is still not clear on whether those vaccinated can still transmit the virus to others.

Some Canadian "snowbirds" are getting vaccinated in Florida and Arizona.

The cost of a test and 72-hour stay at a government approved facility will come at the cost of travellers, feds say. Dr. Morley Rubinoff, 71, said he left his condo in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, about six weeks early this year to avoid what he called "hotel hell". The semiretired dental specialist said he arrived in Mexico on December 31 and had planned to stay until mid-March before returning to Toronto.

It's also unknown how long the measures will be in place.

Canada's top doctors say COVID-19 infections appear to be on a downward trend, but worrisome variants are posing an increasing threat to containing the pandemic.

But with new variants of the virus sweeping the globe, and Canadians ignoring pleas to stay home and travelling south for winter, pressure has been building for the government to do more to stop that number from climbing. Alternatively, they must provide proof of a positive test taken 14 to 90 days prior to arrival.

People in quarantine are not allowed to leave their rooms, meals are delivered at staggered times to avoid everyone opening their doors at the same time and hotel staff must wear N95s.

Canada will now receive an additional 2.8 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine between April and June and 6.2 million more than initially planned between July and September.

"And keeping Canadians safe from the virus is discouraging all non-essential travel and ensuring that if people do have to travel, they're doing the things that we can be certain are going to prevent the virus from spreading farther in Canada, particularly given new variants".

Canada, which does not have domestic production, has been contracting for vaccines from Europe and elsewhere.

Trudeau also announced that Canada is expected to secure roughly four-million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine by the end of March.
