The cost of the mandatory three-day hotel quarantine that goes into effect on Monday appears to be well below the $2,000-per-person price tag cited by officials when they announced the new program.

On Friday, the federal government released a list of hotels that quarantined travelers can use upon returning to Canada.

Those rates include all costs associated with the quarantine, including food and security, the employees said.

At the Calgary Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel, the three-day quarantine stay for one person costs $1,272 plus tax.

The new rule is set to officially come into effect for all travellers entering Canada on Monday, Feb. 22, and the government has finally released the list of approved quarantine hotels for the four cities permitted to accept global travellers: Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. Those with negative results on their arrival tests will be able to take connecting flights to their final destinations.

Earlier this month, the federal government implemented stricter travel measures requiring all air travellers bound for Canada to present a pre-departure negative COVID-19 test in order to fly.

When he announced the program on January 29, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the cost would exceed $2,000 per person.

As of Friday afternoon, Alt Hotel Pearson Airport, Four Points by Sheraton and Element Toronto Airport, Holiday Inn Toronto International Airport and Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Toronto International Airport have all been designated government-authorized hotels for the mandatory quarantine period.

"None of them are planning on doing the hotel quarantine", Firestone said.

When announcing the new restriction at the end of January, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explained that travellers would have to pay out of pocket for the hotel stay, adding that costs could amount to more than $2,000 when taking into account the private PCR test and required hotel health and safety measures. "It allows. for a person to be tested for COVID and for Canada to receive the results of that test prior to any onward travels", said Hajdu. "It's very important right now that we understand what the virus looks like as it changes and as it shifts, both here domestically in Canada but also in an global context, so we can continue to monitor COVID in Canada".
