3 dead in shooting at gun store in New Orleans

The shooting happened at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in the suburb of Metairie around 2:50 p.m. (2050 GMT), according to a news release from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

"It appears a suspect shot two victims inside the location, then was engaged and shot outside the location by multiple other individuals", said Rivarde.

Police said that the suspect was one of the people found dead on the scene.

Three persons died on the scene, including the shooter.

The authorities said the two hospitalized are in stable condition.

ABC News got a busy signal on multiple calls to the Jefferson Gun Outlet.

The state's branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has issued a statement, saying that it has dispatched special agents to cooperate with the local Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office in the investigation. "The customer, who had been upstairs in a concealed-carry class, questioned the wisdom of starting a gunfight at a gun store". The Associated Press reports that the first shooter, a customer at the gun store and range, fired the initial shots inside where he hit two people who were later pronounced dead.

None of the dead or wounded were immediately identified and details remained sketchy.

Caution tape surrounded the business to keep onlookers from getting close to the scene, where ambulances and numerous law enforcement vehicles had arrived earlier. A neighboring Taco Bell was evacuated.

Metairie, Louisiana is located about five miles away from downtown New Orleans.
