Hospitalizations dropped on Thursday as well, with 196 people in hospital with COVID-19 on Thursday - down from the 207 COVID-19 patients in hospital the day prior.

Henry adds that B.C.'s COVID-19 reproductive number has risen above 1, after dipping below the 1 threshold in early February.

Earlier Friday, Manitoba again expanded eligibility for getting a COVID-19 vaccine - this time to include First Nations people born on or before December 31, 1948, and members of the general population born on or before December 31, 1928.

But whereas the numbers in November were increasing rapidly - COVID-19 hospitalizations rose by as much as 47% in a week in that month - they are now moving in the opposite direction.

Henry says the number of detected cases of COVID-19 "variants of concern" has reached 116, growing by 16 since last reported last Friday.

Despite the good news, it is taking time for hospitals to recover from the surge. There are 228 people in hospital battling the virus, with 62 in critical or intensive care.

The five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 4.3 per cent provincially and 3.8 per cent in Winnipeg.

The new cases bring the total number of lab-confirmed cases Manitoba has seen in the pandemic to 31,657.

Health officials are also closely monitoring 7,931 people for symptoms because they have had known contact with individuals identified as having been infected.

Symptoms of MIS-C include fever that does not go away and inflamed body parts, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs. The rate of active cases is 66.65 per 100,000 people. The overall death rate is 57.38 per 100,000 people.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported there have been 98 Warren County residents who have died of COVID-related causes.

There were 3,094 new cases Thursday.

The province's first wave of COVID-19 peaked in late March previous year at 65 average cases per day, then stayed low until July when it started to creep up - accelerating into a second wave that peaked in late November with an average of 780 daily cases. Cumulative death numbers increased sharply on Wednesday when the county reported a backlog of more than 800 deaths over the autumn-and-winter surge that brought the statewide death toll beyond 50,000. Over the past seven days there have been a total of 367 new reported deaths.

Meanwhile, vaccination efforts continue to struggle against issues such as weather, limited doses and bungled efforts to direct shots to hard-hit communities.

Concerns are also growing about mutant variants of the coronavirus, including a California strain that new research strongly suggests spreads more readily than its predecessors. Over the past seven days, there have been a total of 16 new cases.

"All of the evidence has shown us that the things that we do to prevent transmission work against these variants as well", Henry said.

The latest figures were revealed as more than 18.6 million people in Britain have been given the first jab of the coronavirus vaccine.
