"Each step on this journey brings us further along the path to recovery for the billions of children and families affected around the world".

"The first segment of the population that will receive from the 600,000 doses will be health workers, adults 60 years and over, people with underlying health conditions, frontline executive, legislature, judiciary and their related staff, frontline security personnel, some religious leaders, essential workers, teachers and other personalities in Greater Accra Metro including Awutu Senya West and Awutu Senya East in the Central Region".

The vaccines were produced by the Serum Institute of India, in the Indian city of Pune, and are part of the first wave of Covid-19 vaccines headed to low and middle-income countries, the joint statement added.

Other rich countries, such as Canada, New Zealand and Singapore, have applied to receive vaccines through COVAX even though they have their own supplies.

Vaccinations are scheduled to start on Tuesday in Accra, Kumasi and Obuasi. Ghana has recorded more than 81,000 infections and over 500 lives lost, data from worldometers shows. But it will not be enough to reach herd immunity and effectively contain the virus, forcing African countries to also look to bilateral agreements, donations and an African Union procurement plan.

"It means that countries can go through the platform and place their orders once we have given endorsement to that product", Nkengasong said. China has already provided vaccines to 53 countries and is exporting vaccines to another 22 countries.

Ghana is among 92 countries that will receive vaccines for free through the initiative, which is led by the WHO; Gavi, a vaccine group; and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.

Similarly, the expert committee of the Africa CDC is set to review Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in the coming days and make a statement regarding its use on the continent, Nkengasong said.

"Today is a major first step towards realizing our shared vision of vaccine equity, but it's just the beginning", he said.

Ghana has reported at least 80,759 cases of COVID-19 and 582 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

He had earlier warned that so far 210 million doses of vaccine have been administered globally but half of those are in just two countries and more than 200 countries were yet to administer a single dose.

It was launched in June 2020 to try to prevent poorer countries being pushed to the back of the queue as wealthier nations bought billions of doses for their populations.

"I was very excited and quite happy that one of the developing countries was also getting involved with vaccines", said Winnipegger Frank Indome, a board member of African Communities of Manitoba Inc.

Beyond the moral duty of sharing vaccines broadly, scientists have warned that that allowing the coronavirus to spread freely in any population is a global risk because that could lead to risky new variants that could then spread - even in people who had already had the virus or who had been vaccinated against it.
