Texas and Mississippi's Republican governors announced Tuesday that they're lifting their COVID-19 mask mandates that were imposed last summer, but only lightly enforced.

Waco ISD's superintendent said she expects masks to be required on Waco ISD campuses through at least the end of the school year following Governor Abbott's announcement that he is ending the statewide mask mandate.

Nearly 44,000 people have died since the start of the pandemic, but Governor Abbott chose to use Texas' independence day to announce that a mask mandate has been dropped, and businesses are being encouraged to open as if nothing is going on. Of course they want to open up.

"If COVID hospitalizations in any of the 22 hospital regions in Texas rise above 15% of the hospital bed capacity in that region for seven straight days, then a county judge in that region may use COVID mitigation strategies in their county", said Abbott. But the president appeared to be referring to Abbott's executive order when he urged Americans to continue wearing face protection.

Businesses are able to limit capacity or implement additional safety protocols if they choose to do so. "It's just that now state mandates are no longer needed". "So now there will be infections, one would think".

And while 50 Cent doesn't live in Texas, he frequently pops up in the state to promote his liquor brand, Branson Cognac.

Reeves said his state is now putting its focus on rapid vaccine distribution.

According to The New York Times, Texas ranks 48th in vaccine administration, meaning only two states (Georgia and Utah) have inoculated even fewer of its residents on a percentage basis.

The US has recorded over 515,000 Covid-related deaths - far more than any other country. Although Travis County did not approve reopening bars under that earlier rule, Abbott's new executive order means Austin-area bars can reopen at full capacity beginning next Wednesday.

"We have made incredible progress in recent weeks and months, and I thank our business community for their ongoing commitment to saving lives", Lightfoot said in a written statement.
