Zaid is a distant cousin of King Abdullah.

Jordanian royal family member Hassan bin Zaid and former head of the royal court Basem Awadallah were arrested on Saturday due to "security reasons", according to state media Petra. The king has cultivated close relations with USA and other Western leaders over the years, and Jordan was a key ally in the war against the Islamic State group.

This is despite the military previously denying that Hamzah had been detained.

Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri also voiced support for King Abdullah II, saying that Jordan's stability os the basis for the stability of the whole Arab world.

The agency did not provide further details or name the others who were arrested.

Following the reports, the US Department of State said on Saturday that King Abdullah is a "key partner" of the United States and "has our full support", Reuters reported, citing an email by State Department spokesman Ned Price.

"The Arab Republic of Egypt expresses its full solidarity and support to [.] His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Hussein in maintaining the security and stability of the kingdom against any attempts to overthrow [him]".

The Prince, who is half brother to King Abdullah, claims that his detention comes as part of a crackdown on critics. The king has cultivated close relations with USA and other Western leaders over the years, and Jordan was a key ally in the war against the Islamic State group. Jordan is a key U.S. partner in the Middle East, given its geopolitical position as a neighbor to Israel, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The country, with a population of around 10 million, also hosts more than 600,000 Syrian refugees.

Abdullah stripped his half-brother Hamzah of his title as crown prince in 2004, saying he had made a decision to "free" him "from the constraints of the position of crown prince in order to give you the freedom to work and undertake any mission or responsibility I entrust you with".

The current crown prince is Abdullah's oldest son, Hussein, who is 26. Abdullah had chosen Hamzah as his crown prince hours after their father died of cancer in February 1999.
