Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has invited Major League Baseball to play the 2021 All-Star Game in NY instead of Atlanta after controversy over a new voting law in Georgia - but critics say that voting laws in the Empire State are more restrictive than in Georgia.

The Democrat's explicit support of the move on Saturday appeared to be in stark contrast with his Republican successor's statement the day before, where Donald Trump called for a boycott of baseball and all the "woke companies that are interfering with Free and Fair Elections". The prohibition extends 150 feet from a polling place and 25 feet from any person standing in line.

Lorre Sweetman, in Kahului, Hawaii, said it was a poor move by Major League Baseball because it wasn't based on the actual new voting laws but on "political pandering" and misinformation.

However, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has accused NY of having more restrictive voting laws then his own state does, saying bluntly: 'It's easier to vote in Georgia than it is in NY'.

"When governments restrict access to the ballot box, someone has to step in to encourage these entities to roll back those measures", he said. 202, legislation that activists have said will curtail the influence of Black voters, in this handout photo posted to Kemp's Twitter feed on March 25, 2021.

"They caved to pressure without considering the message this sends to fans who just want to enjoy the game and support their team", she said.

But Dick Pagano, a baseball fan in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, said he will not watch or attend any games this year.

Gov. Kemp said on Friday that he spoke to the Braves organization about their stance on the All-Star Game. "And do all hate the 75m who voted for Trump?" he wrote.

"I'm surprised when people argue that moving it away from Atlanta is a bad move because it would bring lots of money to the area", he said.

Manfred signaled earlier this week that a move of the All-Star Game was likely.

The league did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.

"Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views", MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. He said its decision means "cancel culture" is coming for American businesses and jobs.

Some San Diego community leaders are calling on the Major League Baseball to consider Petco Park as a venue for the 2021 All-Star Game.
