Jordan said it uncovered a plot to destabilize the kingdom that involved King Abdullah II's half-brother and extended beyond the country's borders.

Safadi said Hamzah was warned Saturday by the country's military chief to halt his activities but rejected the request.

King Abdullah II will discuss the situation with Hamzah, his half-brother, directly and within the royal family, Safadi said in a press conference.

On Saturday, the military warned the prince over actions it said were undermining "security and stability" in Jordan, a key U.S. ally.

Hamzah's videotaped statement came after two former senior officials and other suspects reportedly had been arrested for "security reasons", even as authorities denied that Hamzah had been detained or placed under house arrest. "God bless and keep them safe".

The Ministry of Presidential Affairs stressed the UAE's full support for all decisions and measures taken by King Abdullah and his crown prince to maintain Jordan's security and stability and "to defuse any attempt to impact them". But the prince has disputed this in a video message.

"Jordan's security and safety is a fundamental basis for the security and safety of the Arab world", Lebanese Prime Minister designate Saad al Hariri said on Twitter. "The Israeli security establishment would not look favorably toward any real instability in Jordan that triggers a Palestinian crisis".

Safadi, who is also foreign minister, said that an additional 14 to 16 suspects had been arrested.

In 2005, Awadallah became the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation before taking the Finance department. He was also an adviser to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He had played a key role pushing for economic reforms in the country before he resigned in 2008 amid criticism over alleged interference in sensitive political and economic issues.

The alleged plot "included at least one other Jordanian royal as well as tribal leaders and members of the country's security establishment", the U.S. daily added.

In light of the developments of the past two days, I place myself in the hands of His Majesty the King, stressing that I will remain in the era of fathers and grandfathers, faithful to their legacy, walking on their path, loyal to their path and their message and to His Majesty, and committed to the constitution of the dear Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Hamzah said he was not allowed to leave his home or meet with other people, according to a video provided by his lawyer to the BBC.

"I'm not part of any conspiracy or nefarious organization or foreign-backed group, as is always the claim here for anyone who speaks out", he said.

Sherif is a title given to those close to the royal family in Jordan. "This file is now more or less closed".

Jordan received support from several countries, including Morocco.

On Saturday the military said it had issued a warning to the prince over actions targeting "security and stability" in the key USA ally. "It has also had to undergo some very serious austerity measures that are starting to be really painful for ordinary Jordanians", she told DW News.

He was named crown prince of Jordan in 1999 and was a favourite of King Hussein, who often described him in public as the "delight of my eye".

"He did say that he met with some of the tribal leaders, so one can then understand why the official view that this was a destabilizing move on his part", she said.

"I am not responsible for the lack of faith people have in their institutions", Prince Hamzah said in one of the videos given to the BBC.

"Jordan is normally a stable Arab kingdom that has been a staunch ally of countries in Europe and the United States, particularly when it comes to counterterrorism cooperation in the Middle East", Sweis said.

Jordan's stability is crucial to the region as it sits at the crossroads of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It's home to as many as 2 million Palestinian refugees and their descendants, and chaos there could endanger the security of Israel, with which it shares a frontier and made peace in 1994.
