After public health officials in Peel Region ordered schools closed for two weeks, the medical officer of health for Waterloo region said Monday she has no plans to follow suit.

Children under six years of age who are not attending school will be able to continue to attend licenced childcare programs in Peel Region during the closure period but Peel Public Health says that children who are attending school will not be able to attend childcare centres or day camps so long as the order is in effect.

In a statement provided to CP24, the Peel District School Board said that it respects the decision taken by Loh and will continue to work to ensure that the health and safety of students and staff in schools is its "main focus".

At this time, the Health Department is not planning to close any school boards. "Due to our strong infection prevention measures, 99 per cent of students and staff have no active cases of COVID-19, however we must remain vigilant and keep our guard up in order to keep schools safe and open". "TPH will continue to recommend early dismissal for individual schools upon investigation to protect students, staff, teachers and school communities".

"It is our firm belief that schools should be open for in-class learning, as they are critical to student mental health".

Affected students in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will move to remote learning.

"The Ford government's shutdown announcement did nothing to assure Ontarians that it has their best interests at heart".

Lecce said that almost 3 in 4 schools have "no cases at all", adding that the government will not hesitate to take action if the circumstances worsen.

"As medical experts have said, there is no excuse - no valid reason - to not begin vaccinating all essential workers today; this includes all education workers. Failure to do so, with so many available vaccines sitting in freezers, is negligent and risky".

He says the schools will move to online learning only and will remain closed until April 18.

680 NEWS later confirmed the letter was inaccurate, leading to the YCDSB issuing a separate letter to parents apologizing for the confusion.
