Both Porcupine Health Unit and Public Health Sudbury and Districts sent news releases Monday night about the reporting of myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, and pericarditis, inflammation of the lining around the heart, by Public Health Ontario - similar to occurrences in the United States and Israel involving COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.

About 41 million doses will be shared through COVAX, the World Health Organization effort to get lower-income and under-developed nations vaccinated, the White House said in a Monday statement.

During the presentation, Dr. Matt Daly - chair of the ACIP COVID-19 vaccines working group - emphasized the strength of the US vaccine safety monitoring system.

The CDC said it was still assessing the risk from the condition and did not specifically confirm a causal relationship between the vaccines and the heart issue. However, there is a breakdown of the adverse events experienced overall.

Public Health Ontario said of the 19 reports, four were diagnosed with myocarditis, 12 were diagnosed with pericarditis and the other three were either perimyocarditis, myopericarditis or inflammatory cardiac reaction of unclear significance.

"Really you're giving the kids the vaccine to protect another group of people, the adults", says Dr. Neil Rau, an infectious diseases physician based out of Halton Healthcare.

"We do not know potential mechanisms yet", Dr. Matthew Oster, a member of the CDC's COVID-19 vaccine task force, said during the presentation.

"These cases are rare, and the vast majority have fully resolved with rest and supportive care", said CDC director Rochelle Walensky last week ahead of the meeting, which was initially scheduled for last Friday but postponed because of a new public holiday.

Experts have said that the benefits of immunization far outweigh the risk of the possible problems, but they are expected to revisit that debate, particularly for adolescents and young adults.

When it comes to vaccine confidence, Sundaram said there's a big spectrum of people ranging from those who want more information to people dead-set against vaccination. Researchers and officials are tracking the phenomenon closely, but so far they've found no cause for alarm. The provincial rate is 45.8 reports of AEFI per 100,000 people.

While the extent of heart conditions among youth is now unclear, a report recently submitted to the Israeli Ministry of Health concluded the risk of developing a heart issue post-vaccine ranged from 1 in 3000 to 1 in 6000 among men aged 16 to 24.

Also, as of Wednesday, anyone who got their first dose of an mRNA vaccine, Pfizer or Moderna, on or prior to May 30, and who lives in the region, is eligible for an earlier second dose and can reschedule an earlier appointment by visiting RegionofWaterloo.ca/VaccineBook.

All of the patients responded well to treatment and most did not require actual hospital admission, Luck added.

"To date, no clear association has been established between myocarditis/pericarditis and COVID-19 vaccines", reads the most recent federal vaccine safety update.

The cases are predominantly among males, most occur after the second dose, and there are no confirmed deaths. "This effect, largely kind of disappears once you get into these older age groups - individuals 50 and over".

If a person develops myocarditis after their first dose, they will be advised to defer their second dose until more information is known. The meeting is expected to be wide-ranging, with discussion of heart inflammation, booster shots and the use of mRNA vaccines in adolescents.

The projections also revealed that the government expects Moderna's vaccine to be available from September, with 87,000 doses distributed per week.
