Alfa Romeo has revealed details of the its new Stelvio SUV ahead of its arrival in United Kingdom showrooms later this year.

Alfa Romeo officials have suggested that the new model could account for as much as two-thirds of its annual sales volume over the next five years.

Following the reveals at the LA Auto Show of the "first edition" - which has not yet been confirmed for the United Kingdom - and the range-topping Quadrifoglio that arrives later this year, the brand has announced that the United Kingdom line-up will bring three trim levels - Stelvio, Stelvio Super and the fleet-orientated Stelvio Tecnica - and a launch engine line-up of a 276bhp 2.0-litre Turbocharged petrol or a 207bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine, both combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and Q4 all-wheel drive.

The diesel will later also be available in 180PS form. The Stelvio petrol does the 0-100 kmph sprint in 5.7 seconds and hits a top speed of 230 kmph.

"While standard features in the European variants include 17" alloy wheels, an electric tailgate and safety systems such as Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning.

In addition, the Stelvio Super gets a choice of leather upholstery in three colours, 18-inch alloys and door sills with steel inserts.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Tecnica is aimed at fleet, corporate and professional customers.

Fuel economy claims of 33.6mpg for the petrol engine and 49mph for the turbodiesel are aligned to Carbon dioxide emissions of 161g/km and 127g/km, respectively. First deliveries are expected to start early autumn.

The Stelvio's Q4 all-wheel-drive system also ensures it can handle the toughest terrain, while a rear-wheel-drive bias means that it should handle just as well on the road, too.

A statement said: "This translates into best-in-class control in terms of traction and directional stability on corners".
