Following Perdue's confirmation, Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor said, "We congratulate Secretary Perdue on his confirmation to lead the U.S. Department of Agriculture and look forward to working with him to advance the biofuels industry and move American agriculture forward".

"The USDA and farmers and ranchers in South Dakota and around the country will be well-served by Sonny Perdue's experience as a farmer, successful agribusinessman, and long-time public servant, He understands the challenges faced by farmers and others in the agriculture community because he's worked the land himself". NACD has supported his nomination since it was first announced by President Donald Trump in January. The former Governor of Georgia will be in charge of leading a federal agency with a $150 billion budget and big issues to deal with on food and agriculture.

Current farm policy expires next year.

Moore: One of the things that we're excited about is not only getting to talk to the President, but having Secretary Perdue in place to hear it firsthand from the folks. Perdue will race into action, addressing USDA employees on Tuesday morning after a swearing-in ceremony and will join President Trump at an agricultural roundtable discussion at the White House in the afternoon.

The "no" votes came mainly from liberals, including U.S. Sens.

Guebert said the Illinois Farm Bureau is happy that both of Illinois' U.S. Senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, supported Perdue.

President Trump will turn to one of his favorite executive tools - the 180-day report - to look for ways to boost rural America, signing an executive order Tuesday for his newly confirmed secretary of Agriculture. Perdue's first cousin, although he did preside over the Senate floor during the vote.

Before serving two terms as governor of Georgia, Perdue served in the Georgia state Senate.

"Governor Perdue's confirmation comes at a critical time as negotiations for the 2018 farm bill reauthorization are underway and as the White House drafts a new trade agenda", Schemm said.

"That is a problem, a constant issue for agriculture that is not new", Starling said.

Tester also called on Perdue to protect safety nets for family farms and ranches in the next Farm Bill.

"Our farmers deserve a government that serves their interest and empowers them to do the hard work that they love to do so much", he said. The vote of 87-11 has always been awaited and anticipated by USA agriculture, and ag associations were quick to praise the confirmation.

"Secretary Perdue knows agriculture; I think he'll do well as agriculture secretary", Maschhoff says.
