Additionally, the IBM X-Force threat intelligence team and Cisco's Talos threat intelligence group will work together on new research and established best practices.

Under the terms of the deal, Cisco's security suite will integrate with IBM's QRadar across networks, end points and cloud.

The new Cisco/IBM relationship promises to reduce the time to detect and mitigate threats, offering companies integrated tools to automate threat response with greater speed and accuracy.

"Cybercrime is expected to cost the world $6 trillion annually by 2021".

The combination of Cisco's best-of-breed security offerings and its architectural approach, integrated with IBM's Cognitive Security Operations Platform, will help customers secure their organizations more effectively from the network to the endpoint to the cloud.

According to the statement, the first two applications produced through the partnership will be tailored to helping security teams understand and respond to advanced threats, and will be made available on the IBM Security App Exchange.

Cisco's Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW), Next-Generation Intrusion Protection System (NGIPS) and Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) and Threat Grid will integrate with IBM's platforms.

Finally, IBM and Cisco also extended their partnership to IBM's Managed Security Services team, including enabling the team to manage and support Cisco security solutions.

The sharing of threat intel is not new ground for the two companies, with both having recently shared intelligence as part of the recent WannaCry ransomware attacks. For joint customers, IBM will deliver an integration between X-Force Exchange and Cisco's Threat Grid.

"IBM has always been a proponent of open collaboration and threat sharing in cybersecurity", said Marc van Zadelhoff, general manager, IBM Security. They continue to collaborate on the investigation to ensure joint customers, and the industry, have the most relevant information.

As part of the announcement, Cisco pointed to the results of a survey it performed with 3,000 chief security officers.

One of the first offerings is designed for the growing hybrid cloud market. Enterprises typically have a bevy of security vendors for various services and software. "Ultimately, we are coming together to make the integration of our products and Cisco's products simpler to integrate, to consume ... and ultimately delivering more value and making our products stickier in the market".
