India, Pakistan exchange fire along LoC; labourer killed, 2 injured

He said that a General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) laborer has been killed and five others have been injured after Pakistani army started firing and mortar shelling in an unprovoked manner. Pakistan violated ceasefire at 11 PM Friday.

Yesterday at 2300 hours, the Pakistani Army violated ceasefire along the LoC in Poonch sector, the spokesman said.

The Army destroyed Pakistani posts opposite Naushera sector in a bid to take the war to the enemy zone which had been sitting pretty on the border without bothering to get protection from firing from the Indian side.

The Pakistani forces were firing using small arms, automatics and mortars, he said.

At least two people killed and six others, including four women, were injured in recent Indian firing along the LoC. Also, one man was martyred, named Fazal Hussain, and another injured, named Jamil Ahmed, in unprovoked firing at Kotli sector.

Speaking on the achievement of the NDA Govern-ment's three years, Jaitley said, "The security forces have been able to build up a lot of pressure on them, and the results are evident nearly on a daily basis".

Both countries have claimed the Kashmir region in full since partition and independence from Britain in 1947, but administer separate portions of it.

Till recently, only the Pakistanis would initiate action against Indian targets while Indian posts would retaliate heavily on being fired upon.

Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said the soldiers and special forces police surrounded a home in northern Nathipora village of Sopore town, where they engaged in gunfire with rebels hiding inside.

Tensions boiled over between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan last September when cross-border raids intensified for several days.

Talking to the High Commissioner JP Singh, Mohammad Faisal asserted that India should respect the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding between the two nations.

The Indian army hit back at the ceasefire violation.
