Lindsay Whalen was back on the Target Center court to retire her No. 13 jersey ahead of the Lynx game against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Whalen, who is the head coach of the Gopher women's team, added she hopes she can be what Auriemma and Reeve are for her players.

Showing little expression, Whalen addressed her fans and shared her thanks for the retired number sent up to the rafters to cap a phenomenal career, then quickly directed the spotlight elsewhere. Entire generations of young people have become basketball fans because of Whalen-she's one of the best to ever play the game and she came from Minnesota.

"I like where we put the banner", Whalen said. "It was great today to see them and supporting as always and it was a lot of fun". She won all four of her WNBA championships and made four All-Star teams with the Lynx.

"Her jersey is in the rafters because she is a victor", Reeve said. "Just the class act on and off the court".

The afternoon featured tributes from former teammates, including Twins great Joe Mauer and Whalen's former coaches Geno Auriemma, and Cheryl Reeve.
