Taiwanese media broadcast footage of the clashes outside the Grand Hyatt, where Tsai is staying during her two-day United States trip.

Meanwhile, New York police broke up fights between supporters and opponents of Tsai.

Typically Tsai spends just a night in the USA while visiting regional allies.

Normally the head of a state passing through American soil would not spark controversy but Taiwan has long found itself in a precarious and unusual diplomatic situation.

He also called it a serious violation of the "one-China" principle, under which the United States officially recognizes Beijing and not Taipei.

Yet Washington remains its most powerful unofficial ally and biggest arms supplier.

"If anyone wants to separate Taiwan from China, the Chinese military will safeguard the national unity at all costs so as to protect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity", Chinese Gen. Li Zuocheng told the US Navy's top admiral earlier this year, according to SCMP.

The United States recognises Beijing as the government of China, but provides military and other support to Taiwan.

Beijing will impose sanctions on USA enterprises involved in arms sales to Taiwan, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

Wang Yi, during his visit to Hungary, asked the United States to "recognise the gravity of the Taiwan question".

"The law [the Taiwan Relations Act] specifically ... requires us to help Taiwan maintain their defence, self-sufficient defence capabilities".

Paal said the Trump administration had yet to indicate a significant shift in the traditional USA approach to Taiwan, but this could change in the event of a deterioration of U.S. relations with Beijing.

China also said the U.S. should not allow an ongoing visit by Taiwan's president to NY. "Any obstacles will only strengthen Taiwan's resolution to join the global community".

Tsai was last in the United States in March, but her transit stops this time will be unusually long and analysts said the extended stopovers, in which she will spend four nights on USA soil, emphasized the Trump administration's support for her at a time when she has been under increasing pressure from Beijing.

She will attend a business forum on Friday and meet students on Saturday morning before heading to the Caribbean.

China has poached five of Taipei's dwindling number of allies since Tsai became president in 2016.

Taiwan pledged a $150 million development loan to Haiti, while Beijing reportedly offered the Dominican Republic investments and loans to the tune of $3 billion.
