The Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will interview six candidates for Team India's head coach position at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters on Friday (August 16).

Apart from Shastri, there are two more Indians who have been shortlisted for the post - former cricketer Lalchand Rajput and Robin Singh.

BCCI informed all the six shortlisted candidates about the interview date and time on Monday. He scored 3,830 runs in Tests at 35.79 with 11 centuries, and also took 151 wickets.

In 2017, he was appointed as the head coach of the national side in 2017 following Anil Kumble's departure before being given a 45-day extension following the 2019 ICC World Cup.

There have been suggestions from the BCCI that Shastri is most likely to continue, something that has the backing of India captain Virat Kohli, who publicly expressed his support for Shastri at a press conference before flying out for the tour of the US and the Caribbean late last month.

Lalchand Rajput has also represented India for a brief period between 1985 to 1987.

The former Australian all-rounder played global cricket between 1987 and 1999 in both Tests and ODIs sporadically. He played in one Test and 136 ODIs in an worldwide career between 1989 and 2001. He also appeared in 137 first-class matches scoring 6,997 runs and bagging 172 wickets.

Since his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2004, the former India all-rounder has been extensively involved in coaching. He was then appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians in 2010 and now, is the fielding coach of the franchise. He coached the West Indies to ICC World T20 glory in 2016, before being appointed head coach of Afghanistan in 2017.

Former Kiwi coach Mike Hesson (2012 to 2018), was in charge of Kings XI Punjab this season, before he quit.

Tom Moody is a former Australian all-rounder amd has been a coach with the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the past six years.

Former New Zealand and Kenya coach Mike Hessons is also a contender for the top position. Hesson is a popular coach and was instrumental in ushering a positive change in New Zealand cricket before and after the 2015 World Cup.

While Hesson is the former New Zealand coach, Moody was a part of Sri Lanka team. Besides this, Simmons also played in 207 first-class matches and 306 List A games.

Before leaving for the tour of West Indies, captain Virat Kohli had said that he is in favour of Shastri continuing as the head coach of the Indian team despite the criticism he faced following the semi-final ouster from the World Cup. However, he was sacked soon after completing a year in the wake of the Caribbean side's dismal campaign at the 2016 T20 World Cup in India. Also, he was the manager of a young Indian side which won the World T20 in South Africa back in 2007.
