Liverpool's goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has revealed Alisson Becker is making "steady progress" as he continues to work his way back to fitness.

As reported on ESPN, the shot-stopper suffered a calf injury earlier this season and has been replaced by Adrian between the sticks.

"Ali has been working with Dave [Rydings] in the gym a lot to improve the strength and try to keep the fitness levels up", Achterberg recently said.

"In the last few days he has been out on the pitch to do some catching and footwork, as well as small passing drills", he told The Mirror .

"He has made steady progress. It needs time and we can not look too far ahead, so we take each day as it comes, see how he feels, and then make progress from that".

The Brazil worldwide had to be substituted during the opening fixture of the Premier League season against Norwich City on August 9, slipping while taking a goal kick and grabbing the back of his leg before falling to the turf again.

The best thing to do is let him recover at his own pace, with Adrian doing a decent job of covering for him for the time being.

The 48-year-old is pleased with how the ex-Real Betis man has handled the pressure of playing for a club of Liverpool's stature, which was made more intense by the lack of extra training sessions and an injury he picked up after he helped the side to the UEFA Super Cup last month. "We kept it ticking over to make sure he is ready to go again".

"He is a really nice guy, he is always positive and good to talk to". He fits in really well with the group, which is important.

"It is really hard for anyone to replace Ali, especially when you've not had a chance to settle and pick everything up".

"Obviously Adrian came late in the summer to us and then after that he had an ankle injury, so we thought it would be beneficial to do some more sessions to keep it going, really".

"Coming to Liverpool, there are high expectations but he has dealt with them really well".
