During the ninth match of the seventh season of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League between Jamaica Tallawahs and St Lucia Zouks at Sabina Park, Jamaica Tallawahs all-rounder Andre Russell was hit in near his right ear by St Lucia Zouks fast bowler Hardus Viljoen.

While Russell got up by himself, he had to leave the field on a stretcher. At first, it appeared that there was no neck guard on Russell's helmet.

The incident took place in the 14th over, after Russell, batting on zero, failed to connect with a pull. Russell immediately dropped to the ground and the Zouks fielders then removed his helmet. When the medical team rushed in to check on Russell, the batsman was able to stand up.

A medical update from the franchise later confirmed Russell had not suffered from any serious injury.

The official account of the CPL T20 league later tweeted: "Andre Russell has gone to the hospital for a scan". He left the field on a stretcher earlier having been hit on the head by a bouncer. Despite the confirmation, it has also been learnt that the all-rounder has been ruled out for the remaining part of this year's CPL.

Three overs after the incident, Tallawahs head coach Donovan Miller told the broadcasters that "there was no update on Russell just yet", but at the innings break, the commentators informed that Russell had been taken to the hospital for further checks.
