All signs points towards Ohtani returning to being a two-way player in 2020.

The Los Angeles Angels designated hitter will undergo surgery on Friday to adress a bipartite patella in his left knee, the team announced Thursday. Neal ElAttrache and Brian Schulz, who will perform the surgery.

"It had started to cause Shohei a little apprehension as he was increasing the intensity of his mound progressions", Eppler said. "If we pushed the intensity and he compromised something in his delivery, that could lead to some unforeseen issues". The procedure will focus on Ohtani's bipartite patella, and it will keep Ohtani on the mend for roughly eight to twelve weeks. Ohtani had been asymptomatic throughout his professional career, but it "aggravated him a number of times throughout the season", Eppler said. "My understanding is that people who suffer from this condition have a patella that did not fuse at birth".

Last year, he was informed that he would need Tommy John surgery to reconstruct the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

The TJ recovery kept Ohtani from making his 2019 debut until May 7, and he was limited strictly to designated hitter duty in his second big league season.

The Angels presented the possibility of surgery on Tuesday morning, and Ohtani made the decision 24 hours later, prior to homering in what would be his final game of 2019.

Ohtani will put his throwing program on hold while recovering from surgery, but he should complete the throwing portion of his Tommy John rehabilitation by December, Eppler said.
