The man then reported his unusual discovery and that's when the skeletal remains of William Moldt who went missing in 1997, were found inside the vehicle.

Submerged in the corner of a retention pond in Wellington, Florida, rested a auto that was heavily calcified and clearly had been in the water for a long time.

The remains of a Florida man missing for more than two decades were discovered in a sunken vehicle - thanks to Google Earth.

He reportedly did not appear intoxicated at the time and left alone in his vehicle according to WPTV.

Moldt's body was found still inside his auto, which had been submerged in the pond near the housing project.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said on Thursday that a previous resident of the Grand Isles neighborhood in Wellington, Florida, was checking the neighborhood on Google Earth when he zoomed into the lake and saw what looked like a auto.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said the vehicle was discovered in the pond behind a resident's home on Moon Bay Circle in August. Barry Fay, the current homeowner near whose house the vehicle was found, told the Palm Beach Post that anything from the shoreline had ever fallen in his sight.

The former resident, who was not identified by police, then contacted a current resident that lives adjacent from the submerged object.

Investigators towed the auto and the remains to the county medical examiner's office for processing, the sheriff's office said. But that changed last month-thanks to Google Earth, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

"I called the former owner of my house and asked if she knew about this", Fay said.

Fay was skeptical, so he called a neighbor who operates a drone.

Google Earth helped law enforcement discover the remains of a Flordia man who went missing after he left a nightclub in 1997.

It's unclear how Moldt's vehicle ended up inside the pond at the Grand Isles development, which was still under construction when he disappeared.

"He also was not a frequent drinker but did have several drinks at the bar", the report said.
