The 23-year-old also gave a strong showing in the middle of the park for Nigeria, with some even comparing him to Austin Jay Jay Okocha.

Brown's younger sister Fiona died from skin cancer in 2008 and the Celtic captain has previously been subjected to other similar comments.

Now the 34-year-old has opened up about the abuse he received outside Rangers' stadium for the first time.

Glasgow Rangers coach, Steven Gerrard, on Thursday said Joe Aribo's form at the club earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles squad.

"Abuse has happened over the last twelve years of my career", added Brown.

"Fans from both sides were phenomenal to be honest", said Brown while he also described an email apology from Rangers as "lovely". "It's hard, it's sad and it shouldn't be happening".

"Every supporter I bumped into and the players in the dressing room throughout summer kept asking me about Kent", the Rangers boss said. [For] ninety minutes you can shout, you can swear at me as much as you want on the park but don't go into detail like that off the park.

'People can just shout and say what they want and think it's appropriate but for me it's just about getting over that and focus on playing football again.

Brown feels there is a simple reason for the growth in unacceptable abuse over the course of his career.

"That's easy, social media", Brown replied. "I have never been an worldwide coach and I totally understand they want to get as many sessions in as they can".

"Someone sitting in the house, who has probably never played sport, thinks they will drink a bottle of vodka and then go and write something online".

"You are always going to get a bit of stick - for me, it's about how you bounce back". For me it's about how you bounce back.
