While Gregg Berhalter's United States will need to show they can beat much higher quality opponents, the easy win was a welcome confidence builder for a team that lost to Mexico in the Gold Cup final in July, then lost to Mexico again in a friendly before playing to a 1-1 draw with Uruguay last month.

The third goal came when Josh Sargent turned the ball and found McKennie, who returned the favor to Morris for 3-0 in the ninth minute.

Gregg Berhalter's US were a class above in the American capital, where the home side led struggling Cuba 6-0 at half-time.

McKennie returned the favor in the ninth as Morris converted, and McKennie got his third in the 13th minute on a cross from Reggie Cannon, his sixth goal in 16 global appearances.

It got ugly for Cuba as McKennie completed his hat-trick four minutes later when Reggie Cannon slid a ball across the six-yard box and the former reacted quickest.

Christian Pulisic converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, nonchalantly putting his shot in the center of the net for his 14th global goal, then was expressionless.

The Nations League, a new tournament for teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean, has relatively low stakes but provides additional competitive matches, though former United States coach Jürgen Klinsmann called them "a waste of time" because it forces regional powers to meet weaker nations.

After three matches without victory and two losses, U.S. needed a response and they got it in style.

Morris and Joshua Sargent also scored and Dario Ramos also put one into the net.

It was a memorable outing for the 21-year-old. They came within a single strike of tying their all-time mark for most goals in a game and never gave Cuba a chance to compete, setting themselves up nicely for a more hard task on Tuesday: a match-up against continental rivals Canada.
